Telegram Voice to Text: Transcribe Voice and Video Messages

How to turn Telegram voice messages into text: the Premium →A button, free weekly tries, round video messages, bots, and exporting .ogg files to transcribe.

Chat bubble with a voice message waveform and a small arrow-to-A button turning it into lines of text

Also available in: Русский, Українська, Dansk, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, Magyar, Nederlands, Norsk bokmål, Polski, Português (Brasil), Suomi, Svenska, Türkçe, Ελληνικά, עברית, العربية, 한국어, 日本語, 中文(中国), 中文(台灣), Indonesia, Tiếng Việt

Telegram has a built-in voice to text button: tap the small →A icon next to any voice message or round video message, and the text appears under it. Unlimited use is part of Telegram Premium, but non-Premium users get a few free transcriptions each week, and you can always export the voice file and transcribe it elsewhere. This guide covers the Premium method step by step, the free options, long voice notes, groups and privacy.

Reading instead of listening helps in all the usual places: in a meeting, on a loud train, late at night, or when a colleague sends a six-minute voice note with one address buried in the middle. Text is also searchable, which audio never is.

How Telegram voice to text works

Telegram added voice-to-text conversion as one of the launch features of Telegram Premium in June 2022. Later that year it extended the feature to video messages, the round videos people record in chats. In its announcement Telegram also invited users to rate transcriptions to help improve them.

At the end of 2023 Telegram opened the button to everyone with a cap. Its blog post at the time said all users could convert up to two messages per week, while Premium kept unlimited conversion, and that the change would roll out gradually by region. Telegram's API documentation describes a weekly trial counter that resets, so the free allowance is real; the exact number can change, and the app shows what you have left when you tap the button.

There is a third route that many people miss. Telegram's group boosts unlock perks for whole groups, and Telegram's Premium FAQ lists unlimited voice-to-text conversion for group members from boost level 6 upward. If you are in a large, well-boosted community group, you may be able to transcribe every voice message there without Premium.

Transcription runs on Telegram's servers rather than on your phone, which is why it works the same on Android, iPhone and the desktop apps, and why it needs a connection.

How to transcribe Telegram voice messages with the →A button

  1. Update Telegram from Google Play, the App Store or telegram.org.
  2. Open the chat and find the voice message.
  3. Tap the →A icon on the right of the waveform. After a moment, the text appears below the message.
  4. Tap the icon again to hide the text when you are done.
  5. If the result looks wrong, use the rating option to tell Telegram, then listen to the original.

Round video messages to text

For a Telegram video message, the round video in a chat, the →A button sits next to the video bubble. The process is the same, and Premium users can transcribe video messages without limit. Telegram's announcement of the free tries talks about messages in general, so check whether your app shows the button on round videos without Premium.

Languages and accuracy

Telegram does not publish a list of supported languages. In practice the button handles widely spoken languages well on clear audio, and it detects the language automatically, so you do not choose one. Expect weaker results with strong accents, background music, wind, very quiet speech and messages that switch languages mid-sentence. You cannot correct the transcript inside Telegram, so for anything important, check it against the audio.

Telegram voice message to text without Premium

If you have used up your free tries and do not want a subscription, you have three practical options.

1. Wait for the weekly reset or use a boosted group. For occasional messages, the free allowance may be enough. In boosted groups, check whether the button works without limits.

2. Use a transcription bot. Many Telegram bots offer to transcribe forwarded voice messages. They work, but think about what you are doing: forwarding a voice note to a bot sends someone else's voice to a third party you know little about. Bots are run by independent developers, not by Telegram, and their privacy policies, storage periods and server locations are often unclear. Many also cap free use and then ask for payment. Avoid bots for anything personal, medical, legal or work-related.

3. Export the voice file and upload it to a transcription tool. This takes a minute longer, but you control where the audio goes, you get editable text, and length limits are far more generous. The next section explains how.

Exporting Telegram voice messages as files

Telegram voice messages are Opus audio in an Ogg container. Depending on how you save them, the file ends in .ogg or .oga. Both are the same kind of audio.

Telegram Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux)

The most reliable way to get the files is the export tool:

  1. Open the chat in Telegram Desktop.
  2. Click the ⋮ menu at the top right and choose Export chat history.
  3. Untick everything except Voice messages, plus Video messages if you want round videos too. Set a date range if you only need recent notes.
  4. Choose a folder and export. Telegram creates an HTML or JSON file of the chat and a subfolder with each voice note as an .ogg file.

For your whole account, use Settings > Advanced > Export Telegram data. Menu labels shift a little between versions, but the export tool has been part of Telegram Desktop since 2018.

On your phone

The mobile apps make it harder to save a single voice note as a file. The simplest workaround is to forward the message to Saved Messages, then export or download it from Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web on a computer. Telegram Web may offer a download option in the message menu; those files often end in .oga.

If an app refuses Ogg files, convert them first with our free Opus to MP3 converter. The guide to audio to text converter formats explains why some older tools reject Opus.

Uploading to Audiotexta

Audiotexta's Telegram voice to text tool accepts the exported .ogg and .oga files directly. Upload one or several notes in a browser; the language is detected automatically among 98+ languages, and you get text with timestamps that you can edit while the audio plays. The free plan works without an account for files up to 30 minutes, within 120 minutes per month.

Long voice notes, groups and channels

The built-in button is designed for reading a message quickly. It shows one block of text with no paragraphs, timestamps or speaker names, and you cannot edit it. That is fine for a one-minute note and tiring for a twenty-minute monologue.

A file-based transcript is better when:

  • The voice note is long. Paragraphs and timestamps let you skim and jump back to the part you need.
  • Several people speak, for example a recorded call or a voice chat recording posted in a group. Speaker labels separate who said what.
  • You need it in another language. Translation of the transcript turns a voice note in Russian or Spanish into readable English.
  • You collect voice notes from a group or channel, such as a course, a project team or a community. Export the chat with voice messages only, upload the batch, and you have a searchable archive.
  • You want to keep or share the text. Export as TXT, or with a paid plan as DOCX, PDF or Markdown, and paste it into notes, tickets or minutes.

Built-in vs bot vs Audiotexta

Details checked October 2026; Telegram's limits and bots change often, so check the app.

The built-in button wins on convenience: no export, no upload, nothing new to trust. Bots are the quickest free option but the weakest on privacy. The file route takes more steps and gives you text you can actually work with.

Privacy: who hears your voice messages

A voice message carries someone's voice and often personal details, so it is worth knowing where it goes.

  • Telegram's own transcription is processed on Telegram's servers. Regular Telegram chats are cloud chats stored by Telegram anyway, so the button does not add a new party.
  • Bots add a new party. Anything you forward to a bot leaves Telegram's control. Read the bot's privacy statement if there is one, and do not forward other people's messages to unknown bots.
  • Transcription services should tell you where audio is processed and how long it is kept. Audiotexta deletes files on a schedule and does not use your content to train models; the privacy page has the details.
  • Ask before sharing. A transcript is as personal as the recording. Forward it only where the sender would expect it to go.

If you also receive voice notes on other messengers, our WhatsApp voice to text guide covers WhatsApp's own transcripts and how to export its Opus files. For Telegram, the short version is simple: tap →A when you can, and export the file when the note is long, important or in a language the button struggles with.

How to transcribe a Telegram voice message

  1. Open the chat with the voice message. Update Telegram, open the chat and find the voice message or round video message you want to read.
  2. Tap the →A button. Tap the small →A icon next to the waveform. Telegram converts the message and shows the text under it. Tap the icon again to collapse the text.
  3. Use a free try if you do not have Premium. Without Telegram Premium the same button works for a limited number of messages per week. Telegram announced two per week in late 2023; the app tells you how many tries remain.
  4. Export the voice file for long or important messages. In Telegram Desktop, open the chat menu, choose Export chat history, tick Voice messages (and Video messages if needed) and save. Voice notes arrive as .ogg files.
  5. Upload the file to a transcription tool. Upload the .ogg or .oga file to a service such as Audiotexta, let it detect the language, review the text against the audio and export it as TXT or another format.

Frequently asked questions

Is Telegram voice to text free?

Partly. Unlimited voice-to-text is a Telegram Premium feature. Since late 2023 Telegram also lets non-Premium users transcribe a small number of messages per week, announced as two, and members of sufficiently boosted groups can transcribe without limits inside that group.

How do I convert a Telegram voice message to text without Premium?

Use the free weekly tries first. After that, export the voice message as an .ogg file from Telegram Desktop and upload it to a transcription service, or use a transcription bot if you are comfortable sending the audio to a third party.

Can Telegram transcribe round video messages?

Yes. Telegram Premium includes voice-to-text for video messages, the round videos recorded in chats. The →A button appears on them in the same way as on voice messages.

Which languages does Telegram voice to text support?

Telegram does not publish an official language list. It handles many widely spoken languages in practice, but results vary with accents, noise and mixed-language speech, so test a message in your language before relying on it.

Does the sender know I transcribed their voice message?

Telegram does not describe any notification to the sender when you tap the →A button. Note that the transcription is generated on Telegram's servers, not only on your phone.
